Default Attempting D.S. Axle Seal...

ok so tomorrow i am going to attempt my axle seal on the drivers side. Now i have read the write up on how to do it, and it doesnt mention having to take out the pass. side axle, now cn i take the gears out of the pumpkin, and take only the drivers shaft out? or do i need to do pass?

Also what special tools am i going to need for this? like howto take out shaft and gears. Is there a certain way to take gears out and put in?

Please and feedback will help

I also have the Haynes repair manual, but it shows how to do both sides. i only want to do the one

when i changed mine i used a come along attached to my dads hitch to pull the carrier out. i wrapped a small chain around the carrier and had my dads truck backed up to mine lined up with my front diff. i had him slowly cranking on the come along while i was under the truck to catch the carrier.

you do need to take the passenger axle, intermediate shaft and the cad unit off to get the carrier out.

i disconnected the driver side tie rod because i needed to change the boot anyway but it was nice not having it in front of the diff when i removed the carrier.

measure from the seal to the outside of the axle tube or from the seal to the inside of the axle tube because there isn't a stop for the seal so it would be easy to drive it too far.

you need:
a high quality penetrating fluid for the hub bolts/nut
14mm 12point socket
3/4" drive breaker bar with about a 3 foot piece of pipe for a cheater bar
1 11/16" socket for the breaker bar
1/2" to 3/4" adapter for when you put the nut back on
seal driver (1 3/4" socket will work)
1/2" drive torque wrench that will go over 175 ft-lbs
21mm socket for the caliper mounting brackets
a piece of rope to hang the calipers
dead blow hammer
pry bars or a come along
rtv sealant
new gear oil
drain pan
anti-seize
rags
jack stands
patience.

it took me a couple weeks because i'm lazy and i had to go back to the parts store a time or two, but i'm sure that if you have everything you need to start off with then you could get it done in 6 hours or less + the curing time for the rtv. so do it on a saturday and it'll be done by sunday.

i wasn't in a hurry to get mine done because i have my camaro to drive when the truck is torn down. that and i don't have anyone to help me when it comes time to work on my truck.
