Default Lucky to be alive...

I was going down the highway at about 75mph when I noticed that everytime I would let the gas go, the truck would slow down faster than usual, and there would be a vibration. Next thing I know something popped and I started spinning out of control. All brakes went out but I got it to the shoulder. When I took a look at it, the rear left tire was cocked a good amount and I had no more studs and the whole drum was off.Never been so scared in my life...

Damn dude that sucks. All you need is a set of new wheel stubs and maybe a rim. Give you credit though to recover from a spin out like that.

but having it happen in a rear wheel drive truck, and the studs breaking, yea you did get really lucky

Glad your Ok,sorta looks like the lugnuts came loose before the studs broke off but,who knows.Check the torque on the other 3 wheels and it might shed some light on how this happened.

It's probably more common than you think lol. The same thing just happened to me last wednesday. Except it was my front driver side wheel that fell off. The rim was shot, and good luck finding another stock one. I called every salvage yard in 50 miles of me and no one had the aluminum ones because they're worth more scrapping them than leaving them around waiting for someone to buy them. I ended up just buying a new set of wheels. So if you come up dry like I did, I still have 3 good ones.

Glad to hear you're alright. Interesting experience isn't it?

When was the last time you had the wheel off?

What would cause this to happen? Wore out studs or lug nuts?

I'm not really sure. Two if my studs were broke off. I replaced them all just to be on the safe side, and all of my lug nuts were broke off. Can really say which happened first.

I know sometimes with alloy wheels the lugs have a tendency to back off after about 50-100 miles. It had never actually happened to me before though. Guess I'll be keeping an eye on those things from now on.

I'd be questioning the person who last tightened the lugs, and yes! check the other wheels!
