Default 2001 Ram 4x4 real jumpy

Had to use the 4x4 today because the roads were icy. First time this year. When I put it in, it was like I was running with a flat that changed from wheel to wheel every couple seconds. Stopped the truck and shifted out and back. Hard to keep it on the road. Works good in 2 wheel drive and no clunking.
Any ideas beside dynomite would be appreciated.

sounds like your front tires weren't planted on just ice. i believe that you were hitting patches of pavement and it made that tire grab back and forth. the 4x4 makes for somewhat jerky steering on mine too, especially at low speeds.

you could try finding a snowy field or some mud and see how the 4x4 works there as opposed to the icy pavement. and what do you mean by no clunking? that might be an indicator for hosed gears, shift collar, front axle, u joints, hubs or axles in the front end.

Before everyone thinks I am an idiot, I have driven this road lots in 4 wheel drive. It is not winter truly up here until we get a freezing rain and then snow on top of it. And it can be from now until the end of April. This is bad enough to make driving it dangerous. The front u joints were replaced last year and seem to be still good ( no clicking or clunking). Guess I will find out.

i was suggesting that you confirm my theory that your tires were grabbing patches of ice free pavement, if they weren't then it could indicate a broken part associated with the front axle. that is where the snow, mud or a slushy field would come into play.
