Default Voltage Drop

2000 Dodge 1500 4x4 Sport P/U 5.9L. While driving, voltage gauge bottoms out; I pull over, turn off engine and upon re-start the gauge jumps to about 12-volts; a few blocks later same thing happens. I repeat this process 2-3 times. Eventually upon re-start the gauge goes up to around 14 volts (which is normal) and all is well but...all of a sudden the gauge bottoms out and I start the process over.
Engine RPM's have no effect, new battery, this happens in wet or dry conditions, engine temp does not appear to be a factor, I checked and cleaned alternator terminals. What have I missed?

this had happened to me, check for a loose wire and if not it is probably your alternator. I got mine tested and it gave off enough juice to pass but was failing on and off. More than likely that if you just got a new battery.

I checked the wires, all was well, so I replaced the Alternator, problem solved. The intermittent failures thru me off; usually a failing alternator causes lights to dim. Live and learn. Thanks for responding.

was probably the internal regulator failing....that would cause your symtoms if it was sticking....thanks for letting us know what solved it!
