It's very hard on your engine in multiple ways.

Be a good way to bust or burn holes in pistons with a good chance or scoring the block deeper than it can re-bored.
Other than that nothing very serious.

What did you gap the plugs to? Are you sure its pinging and not a misfire? Have you tried checking voltage at the dist. Might want to get new wires (8mm , 8.5mm) while your at it. Will only help the cause

I had a PCM flash back when my truck had a HARD ping in 04'
Dealer said it need the flash because it was known that when it shifted into 3rd then down to 2nd then back to 3rd yada yada yada.
It ended up being 2 bad cats 1 fully collapsed the other kinda choking on itself.
No ping if I accelerated how do I say ........Gently
But when pulling on to 128 ( I used to live in Mass) Gunning it sounded like metal slamming around under my hood.
I'm a newb here so take this as my $.02

side note here
When was the death flash corrected? Was mine a better version?

the death flash wasn't corrected. the dealer considers it a fix and they will look at you like your stupid if you ask about the death flash. even if you explain it and tell them how it robs your power and how it is the dealers way of saving a boat load of labor by doing a 1/2 hour re-program compared to a 3-5 hour plenum gasket change.

Default from spark knock to no #7 compression

Ahh the joys of mechanicing...the spark knock is almost gone to be replaced by a horrible miss...no compression on No.7 cylinder head...so next question would be were to start on that problem? thanks for all the help/advice on the previous problem but looks like its just been replaced with another problem...

PS should i start a new thread on this problem?

Nah, if your going into a misfire id start by checking your dist. This prolly wouldnt make THAT much of a difference, but are your wires routed per the TSB? That helped me a little with "crosstalk". Had my truck in for routine maint. a while back..cap.. dist plugs ( at college and they frown on that stuff in the parking lot). Guys didnt put my wires back on correctly and i was misfiring badly, exhaust port #6 was as cold as ice. So maybe your not getting good spark to your cylinders?

What type of plugs are you running again? maybe try switchin to the autolites while your at it ?
