Default Transmission woes.

Posted: Wed Nov 04, 2009 4:25 pm Post subject: Transmission shifting.
Hi there. I am brand new to the forum , and sheer frustration brings me here! Much thanks in advance if anyone may be able to direct me to a thread that possibly deals with my particular problem.

I have a 99 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel, and have owned it for a number of years. After having dealt with numerous mechanics I thought I would come here and maybe nail down something concrete.

. My original tranny that I had, has some problems slipping in and out of overdrive while I was cruising at around the 50mph mark. It wouldn't happen all the time, but more often than not.

A week ago I had a new tranny put in by a local mechanic. The original problem of it slipping in and out of overdrive was gone, but replaced with a new problem of it shifting into third gear to soon. This morning I popped into an actual transmission shop, and had them have a peek. Turns out that the linkage was loose, and they adjusted it accordingly. Now, my problem with the tranny shifting earlier than it should going into third is gone, only to have my original problem with it slipping in and out of overdrive return once again!

I am going to be taking the truck into the transmission shop again tomorrow. Before I do, wanted to get some advice from some seasoned individuals with some experience in possible scenarios with this problem. I'm pretty green when it comes to mechanical things such as this.

Thank You.

Jeff

your best bet is not to get a use to tranny, but to rebuild the one you hav. trannys on the Rams dont have a popluar repuation. its possible the tranny you had put in is defected

well if you having the same problem with a second tranny perhaps the tranny wasnt the actual issue to begin with....maybe there is an issue with the linkage or the throttle position sensor or speed sensor?....
when it slips in and out of overdrive is this on flat land?...downshifting when climbing a hill or under heavyload is normal not but just randomly......
How many rpm's is your engine at when doing 50 when it decides to downshift?

???

im saying dont buy a used tranny.

You should build up the one you have

Transmissions on the Dodge Ram trucks dont have a good reputation.

Possibility that the tranny you had put in was defected.

lol thats basically exacally what i said in the last post...
