Default transmission switching too high

Hi,I have a 97 with a 5.9l and 2wd.lately the gears change at a higher than normal rpm, around 3000-3500 rpm.this problem comes and goes, mostly when i'm hwy driving.the thing is,if i turn off the engine and restart,it works find and the gears change normally.but then it will eventually happen again and i have to pull over and restart the engine.some days i have to do this 10 times, but then i could go days without it happening.
any ideas what could be causing this

thanks
glen

i believe that is a symptom of the governor pressure solenoid being gummed up with clutch dust.

call around to some local transmission shops and see if you can find one that will do free diagnostics. some will in the hopes of gaining your business.
what you want to have done is have the guy take it for a test drive with his scanner hooked up to read the governor pressure solenoid pressure. the scanner will show if it is low.
if it is low then that tells you that you have to shell out about 100$ for a new pressure solenoid and sensor and swap them yourself.

then again, it could just be the sensor since it works after shutting it down. the scanner will show if that is not functioning properly as well.

is the governor pressure solenoid also known as the kickdown solenoid? or are they two different things? is it the solenoid that is accessible with the tranny pan removed?

is it this: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...&parentId=58-0

is that the one that is accessed through the tranny pan? i remember people saying that some of them have problems with the wires chaffing on the pan itself.

i think the wire chaffing deal was only one guy.

the solenoid and sensor are side by side and you have to take a plate off the bottom of the valve body to access them, that is with the pan off.
