^ i was gunna say the same thing...

and my drivers side seal has been leaking since i got it (10K ago) and there is no squeaking or anything, and my 4wd works great, i just keep the fluid in it, and check it once a week. i hardly do any mudding or off roading, and i only putt putt with it. its my DD so i want it to last

but a leaky seal wouldnt make it squeak in 4wd only, it would make it squeak consistanly (if that was problem)

The noise maker is the u joint, the seal isn't making any noise.

i've heard that its a bit of a pain to rebuild the double cardon u joints. but at least the drive shaft is easy to take off and you can fix it indoors where the heat is at.

I'm not sure I'd be able to do do that u joint even if I wanted too. To save time and money I'm just going to take my truck to the dealer and have them do my axle seal, that u joint and my power steering pump and all I'll have to pay is my $100 deductible + fluids.

^i hope that works out for you. i wish i could do that every time mine screws up.

you can also remove the drive shaft and take it to a drive line shop and pay them to do it.

I might even do that. Taking my truck to the dealer is really a pain because I'd have to clean it up some, put my stock tires back on and possibly be without a vehicle for a few days.

After reading up on here and pavementsucks about doing the axle seal I think I can do it, I've had my axle for the most part tore apart other than the carrier. My power steering gearbox leaks a little but I still have power steering and it can go months before it needs more fluid so thats not really a big deal.

i can see putting the stock tires back on to keep the warranty valid, but why clean it up? or do you mean getting valuables out of it.

In the middle of the summer I went out mudding and I had my old skinny mud tires on and I never got mud on my windshield or even the body because they were so skinny. Well I got stuck in a whole and had my windows down and for the first time with those tires my truck got covered...I couldn't get my windows up fast enough.

Still looks pretty much the same to this day.

i can't believe you haven't at least wiped it off yet. i wouldn't clean it just for the dealership, with how much they stick it to everyone they ought to get a little dirty when they work on a truck.

I kept wanting to get around to it but kept putting it off between at the time working and just turned 21 with the whole drinking thing and going to the bar it just never happened. I finally got around to cleaning the the junk that piled up in the back over time.
