cold be the governer pressure soleniod and sensor....when they fail the truck goes into "limp home" mode and you only hve first and second gear....do a search and you will find all the info you need on it...I've done it myself...usually you get a 1741 code with a scanner..

now could i go buy one out of a trans at a junk yard give it a try and if it works go buy a new one, or is this one of those things that you really dont wanna swap from truck to truck

xjarhead69 Dec 20, 2009 02:05 PM

I do beleive it is the 46RE transmission in there the same as my 96 has. Hopefully others can chime in to conform that.

You can get the sensors for far less than that.
Ebay is one option, local tranny shops maybe even better.

So I'm guessing that it isn't low on fluid then.
Could be a number of things, sensor related or mechanical.
Might look into adjusting the throttle cable in small increments, if that cable gets the smallest bit out of adjustment it plays havoc with shifting.

If you have a garage, might be worth while to drop the pan and change the fluid & filter, see if that helps.
If not, I'd try to get access to a quality scan tool and see if that'll diagnose your problem.
I wouldn't just go throwing sensors at it without knowing if that will help or not.

i just had a similar problem, took it to a tranny shop and they replaced the govorner pressure sensor and solonoid for $350
