Does cold tranny fluid cause a whining noise?
I bought my 95 ram 5.2 auto w/150k this past summer and it ever since it started getting cold in philadelphia, i noticed a whining noise when i put it in drive and reverse. Increasing the rpms in drive or reverse makes the sound louder. Moving in reverse also makes a growling noise when its cold. After i drive it for a while, i dont really hear it much. Fluid level is good, and i adjusted the bands and fluid/filter change in september. Is this something i should be worried about or is it a normal issue when it is cold out. I read i should i put it into neutral while the truck is warming up too. Any input would be great. The search feature only turns up reverse noises. Thanks!
i havnt heard about the neutral to warm it up but,
is it the original tranny? does the fluid smell burnt? How does it shift?
i know this is something you dont want to hear, but if thats the original tranny, she might be on her last legs....

mine whines every morning on a cold start. if you have a external transmission fluid cooler, it doesn't help it warm up quicker. i do the neutral trick every morning, it doesn't warm the fluid up quickly, but putting it in neutral makes the tranny pump run, and gets the fluid circulating quicker so the trans valves won't starve for fluid the first few seconds of being in a gear.
not sure if its the original tranny, only had for 8 months. i would assume it is though. It shifts very good though. Only thing i notice is when i let off the gas to coast, it kind of clunks a bit while it up shifts. I do have an external cooler on it too. I guess only time will tell.
completely fine. It's an odd harmonic buzz caused by the cold fluid on the trans regulator valve. There's a dodge TSB on it.
Won't hurt anything. but it's scary as hell the first time you hear it. If you want it fixed you can buy this kit and install it if you're comfortable poking around in the valve body.

Mine does it, just like described in the TSB, escpecially when the temps really dip down. Has for 7 or 8 years now, including before and after two rebuilds. It has never done it in any forward gear though as you described. That's the only thing that might make me worry a little.
Mine does it in all gears when its -15 and colder out lol. Well.... everything makes noise then hahah.
