Default New sound system got a question

Ok guys, so I'm putting subs in my Ram. So far I got two Pioneer 12'' subwoofers each subwoofer is 800 watts. I got 1,200 watt wiring kit, just to be safe. A brand New Pioneer CD Player. And just ordered the sub enclosure for under the back seat where the subs will face to the front. Now the question is can I use a 760 watt amp to run the subs?? Will this be ok? Just want to make sure this will be ok before I buy it. Thanks - Luke

crutchfield.com had a video about amps. They said that you want more wattage than your subs. As long as you start everything with the power way down and work your way up to where you like it, you shouldn't have a problem. Especially since your total sub wattage is 1600 you should be fine.

That's quite a bit lower than what you would prefrerably want/need. In fact, I wouldn't trust that low of an amplifier in my truck with those subs. Even if the amp was bridgeable. IMO, you need to be looking at about a 2000W amp if you want things to go smoothly.

The amp you have now, would technically work, but as I said, I wouldn't trust it. Not to mention, you are effectively under powering the woofers, and as an end result you are seriously degrading their life span.

There are several factors that can go into this.

What brand is the amp? The name brands will list RMS and usually PEAK.
The peak figure is pretty much meaningless.
and the cheaper brands will list sometimes only the peak wattage to fool un-suspecting noobs.
Yea an amp can say it will push 1000
watts or whatever the number, but that's just for like 1 second and at a high distortion rate.

Also, do you still have just your stock speakers? Unamplified other than the head unit?

If so, if you power 2 12"s with a huge amp, you will be way bass heavy, as the stock speakers can't keep up with the bass.
Yes you could just turn the levels on the amp down (Or the sub level on the head unit, if so equipped). But you don't need a huge amp if youre just gonna turn the levels down.

Another factor is the type of music you listen to. Also how old the music is, as it seems music across all types seems to have more bass than it did 10-15+ years a ago.

+1 but generaly the bigger the amp the better the bass will be thru the sub as the amp isnt working so hard to produce the power...

In my case i had a kicker L5, but the bass blew the box apart, and then i got the 1800w MTX's (warentee on subs, and i got to trade them)

as for my RAM right now i have sony xplode 1000w amp (black one) and a 10 in.Kicker L5 550 RMS. and let me tell you with only 1 10in. thats PLENTY of bass in my truck. i have the amp bass turned halfway up, and the *** on the HU is on -6....and she still POUNDS....be careful, that amount of subs is probably going to knock your rearview mirror down lol. happened to me........
