Clanging noise in my 1998 47Re transmission while parked and in reverse?
I have a 1998 Dodge diesel 4x4 truck with a 47RE auto tranny in it. When I start it while cold and put in reverse gear, I get a clanging, scraping sound in my bellhousing area. The noise is only while sitting still. Seems like it would have to be either the pump, converter or the flexplate. Correct me if I'm wrong as nothing else should be moving while the trucks not moving. I've checked the bolts on my converter to flexplate and they're tight. I haven't pulled the tranny yet to inspect the flexplate. It all started with a loud squeal while driving at freeway speeds that lasted about a minute. Now also my shift all seem late. When I get to overdrive, everything is normal now without noise.
Could the insides of my billet converter go bad and make slower shifts due to less pressure transfered? Maybe my pump? I'd like to buy stuff to fix before I tear it all out again. I've only had this setup in for about three months. It almost feels out of balance now while idling compared to when it was newer with stock stuff. I have my original tranny I could get a pump out of if necessary.
I think I'll take the check valve out of the cooler lines, readjust the bands again and change the oil and filter to see if thing changes first. Maybe the pan off will tell me something. My 2001 Durango is ill also. When it rains it pours.
Any ideas are appreciated. I love my 12 valve truck and want everything right. Thanks, Herb
