A 4wd truck to rob parts off of, easier and cheaper in the long run to buy a 4x4. IMHO any way.

Frame and drivetrain from a 4WD truck. Not to mention the transmission.

are the frames really different?

i would think if you found a good donor truck, one that was totaled from behind maybe. but i could be wrong. you would need just about everything forward of the rear axle.

my dad looked into doing this with his 99 2wd. According to National 4WD, it would cost around 5 grand, and thats WITH a donor truck. Not worth it to most people. Just go buy a 4x4 and save yourself a ton of money and headaches

2 Step Process:

Step 1 - sell the 2wd

Step 2 - buy a 4wd

As mentioned above it can be done but cost would make it hard to justify.
