Question How to tell which gears I have?

Hey guys,
My truck came with 35's (almost, 315/75) from the previous owner. I'll be looking to get new tires this summer, and am wondering if the previous owner upgraded the axle or not. Some of the mods he did were done well, some not so much. I really like the ride height and look of the 35's, but I'd rather not blow my transmission (it was rebuilt 6 mos. before I bought the truck).

Also, how much real difference is there between a 315/75R16 and a 285/75R16?

Thanks,

Tag under the hood will tell you what it came with. Metal tag(35=3.55 open gear) on the cover, will also tell, if it's still there. If it is still on the cover, it's more than likely correct.

315 to 285 will only be a slight decrease in witdth. When you convert it 315mm (12.4") and 285mm (11.2"). the aspect of the 315 is a 35" tire and the 285 is 33".

If the tag isn't on the cover, is there a way to tell by the shape or something? (I don't know, haven't looked yet)

Boy, that was obvious. (And I missed it...sheesh.)

Oh, and thanks, I'm rather fond of it :-)
