I had this problem and started with replacing the bulbs, waste of money, then I ran new wires to the headlights cuz I thought there was a break in one of them and thats why they would turn on and off when they wanted, waste of time, then I replaced the headlight switch, TADA that was the problem. Alls I can say is thank god for really bright foglights, kept Johnny law off my back on the ride home. And I must say there is nothing like driving down a dark windy road and both your headlights turn off during a snow storm. Well at least I have big tires and a lift kit in case I got to go off roading through all of this lol.

If your wires are singed to Hell... clip, strip, crimp. Just clip the bad ends off. And, if you want, pull the switch out and ohm out the switch. Find the posts that are activated when you hit the high beams. If the high beams aren't engaged you'll see no resistance. If the high beams are engaged, you'll see some good resistance come out. Sorry I don't have exact numbers.

Note: Haynes Manuals save lives.

Nicked a wire in the process of replacing the switch. Check them, replace/tape up any wires that are exposed.
