Exclamation Bad transfer case

Im pretty sure my transfer/c is bad but still have a few questions. There has been a grinding noise coming from under the truck for a few days now and I checked it today(4 jack stands) and the noise was coming from the transfer/c. With the truck in 2WD it grinds and rattles a little bit but with it in 4WD it sounds really bad. To my knowledge i have the nv231hd. the case has a small hairline crack on the bottom of it that allowed all the fluid to drain out. just above the output shaft on the case there is a small hole about the size of a dime. just for the meantime i patched the leaks and topped off with fluid. still grinding though. should i rebuild, replace, buy new..etc. Anyone know where I should start? Any help would be great.

Is this a joke? No really. If all your fluid drained out because there is a crack and a hole in the case, then why does it matter if it's grinding... you need a new case regardless.

But just out of curiosity, with it up on jackstands, were all 4 wheels turning while you were in 4x4? Sounds to me like the chain snapped and tore the case apart, but if 4x4 still works you can rule that out. My other guess is that the bearings got fried without fluid in it, but that doesn't explain the damage to the case itself.

Yes 4WD does work, front tires turned. like i said i know the transfer/c is bad but i cant explain the crack or hole. i dont do any off-roading. I've asked for help because i've never dealt with a Transfer/c or worked on one. Im sure the bearings are shot and probably numerous other internal parts since all fluid was lost for an unknown amount of time. Any advise as far as fixing the prob. I've searched online but (so Far) cannot find a replacement case (if they even exist). Have found plenty of Master Rebuild kits. I dont know anyone that works on 4WD's. I Could probably do it, im just looking for some guidence.

Just get a used T-case off craigslist or in a junkyard. It shouldn't be more than $300 bucks tops.

the most common problem with these t-cases is a broken snap ring on the rear output shaft. i'd guess yours broke and then wobbled around until it broke the case. if you were to pull the tail housing off you might could patch it back up, and maybe weld or jbweld the case back up.

or just get one from the junk yard. if you do this, check the snap ring and fix with the t-case saver kit.
