i'm pretty sure you can pull the codes on your truck without a scantool. i bought a scantool that was obd1 and obd2 compatible for $200 nearly 2years ago. they do make diagnosing a vehicle easier.

Snap On, probably would be the MT2500, its a redish box about 1/2 the size of a keyboard with monochrome readout ontop. Very handy for reseting the fuel sync if you have the distributor out among many other things.
