Default Computer.

Folks,

I was wondering, if I have california emmissions can I whip a federal emmissions computer in the truck? It's a lot easier to obtain the federal emmission ones, so if I can go that route it'd be better.

It should just be plug and play, with the computers having different software, correct?

Thanks,
Brandon

no you need a cali comp....California vehicles have more sensors, thus if you put a federal computer in it wont be able to read the other sensors, causing it not to run at all, run rough, or other various things.

What other sensors? I have a cali emissions truck, and the only thing I noticed was 3 cats. So you are telling me that a SCT or B&G computer upgrade would not work in a cali truck?

Sorry read it wrong, I have a High Altitude computer (56028325), would that be interchanable with a federal or same deal?

I know car-part.com lists them in the same catagory.

The cali trucks have twin O2 sensors Pre cat and twin after. The Fed trucks just have one. If you got a computer they may have to know if it is a cali truck. Not sure though. The Fed computer may just ignore the other O2 sensors. So it may not matter.

call someone like this and ask.
they list a different model for 3.9, 5.2, and 5.9, but not federal vs california.
i don't know how it manages the extra 02's, but i bet this outfit does....

this brings up a real real good question. since the pcm refurbish/exchange people don't make a big deal about Federal vs California, it makes me wonder how does it know two 02 sensors vs four... So if you have a Federal and you want to install true duals, could you convert to a Cali emissions ? How to activate the software ? And how to provide the wiring ? would it be easy, hard, or impossible... Anyone here a Dodge PCM/Emissions expert ? or work at a dealership where you can ask this question ?

They might figure it out by VIN?

Found one of the one's for my truck today, well my junk yard did. Whipped her in, so will see if it fixes my problem, I'll find out in the AM!
