Default 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 / 12 or 24 valve

I have bought a 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 and I am told that they put both the 12 and 24 valve cummins in that year truck . Can anyone tell me how

What was Dodge/Cummins' reason for this change anyway. 24V seems to be much preferred by many.

Edit: meant 12V is preferred.

Most folks I know of prefer the 12V. The 12V was essentially the same from '94-'98. It runs a little dirty compared to modern diesels, but was ungodly powerful, and easy to soup up. I've heard of guys running everything from Bio-Wille, to Filtered french fry grease in it for fuel. Also have heard that it won't play nice with the new reduced sulphur fuel, and that if you run it, you will need an additive. There are other boards that feature "Oilburners" if you want to know more.

The 53 block was only a 24V issue.
