I believe a hotter engine is more efficient then a cooler one
welcome

if you do, it'll be so slight you'll never notice.
some people report that it causes a cel (engine too cold too long), but most don't.
if you do it, get the good Super Stant, about $10-12) not the $5 cheapo.

i converted to a 180. I didnt see any difference, but i am running strickly 180 i had bought a e fan and decided to do the stat to. I love it, i think in long run it will let you engine last longer... less friction

it allows you to run 87 octane withought getting pinging also. but remember that your engine makes the open/closed loop switch at 180*, so if your thermostat is keeping your engine too cool....like said above, it will thrown a CEL for engine cold too long, and make it run very rich bc it thinks its still cold.
and dodge man i dont mean to rattle your cage but there is no way a hotter engine runs better than a cooler one.....please enlighten me as to why you think this?

this was a big topic on slant sixes, got this from a slantsix site "Remember, you are monitoring the coolant temperature, not the engine (metal) temperature. The fact that the coolant is running hotter for any given set of conditions means it is removing more heat from the engine, i.e., the temperature of the engine itself (metal) is now under better control than before. Think this over for a few minutes; there may be little or no actual increase in any temperature you need to worry about"

thermostats http://www.mgcarz.com/thermostats.html

this is why I think this, tell me why is a colder engine better. not sounding cocky

im not saying what your saying is wrong, i have just always believed a motor runs best at an optimun temp, which is usually cooler (the coolant) that hotter.

they are talking about their TR6, some of the ideas are good but Brits what can i say their electrical sucks and many other things, i know i worked on some newer tractors from there, so i wont trust him on some info.

I dont think anybody going to gain mpg or HP, longer life of engine, and less friction running the engine with a cooler thermostat.

and bucksplitter
stay with the stock 195 degree thermostat.

Thermostat or not, a cooler engine runs better. Seals last longer, less friction, and as always colder air produces more horsepower. Yes youll be running a little bit richer with colder air and such but it wont be that big of a difference. Whether your looking at engine coolant or the engine itself the cooler engine is better. If you want to look at it in the sense that the warmer the engine coolant, the cooler the engine is then sure a little warmer coolant would be better. Though I cant imagine how warmer coolant will help the engine stay cooler, colder engine coolant will cool the engine better.

People around here normally switch to a 180 T-stat when theyre pinging, have advanced timing, or have over heating issues ( and by over heating I actually mean over heating not just the needle moving on the temp guage). The 180 stat will open a little sooner and cool the engine a little quicker, that with E-fans and autolite 3923 plugs youll help prevent pinging and overheating if you have those problems, or allow yourself to run a tuned pcm better.

Buck, if your going to install a 180 just because it will run more "efficiently" dont waste your time, the 180 will drop your engines temp. a few degrees, but its really nothing your going to notice, and your mpgs wont drop. I have a 180 installed, but I have it because im running a custom engine tune with advanced timing, the 180 along with other changes prevent my ram from pinging at WOT (wide open throttle). Unless your engine is overheating, then dont bother, if it is overheating though, first try to find the cause, then upgrade your cooling system.
