Check ebay. They sell kits or you can piece together your own lift (usually cheaper for a 3" lift) If you plan on going 5" i would just buy one of the kits because you need a lot more pieces. Here's an example of stuff you can find on ebay...

3" coil spacer - $80
2" add-a-leaf - $70
New shocks - $120
...thats all you need for a 3" lift. They 5" kits usually run over $700+

Topgunzcustom is an excellent seller on there. They have the cheapest prices and ship fast.

topgun has A 3" lift alot cheaper than $349 but it doesnt come with control arms.

$201.60 is the magic number for a kit 3" coil spacers,2" blocks and new 8000 series shocks for the front...of course im local and get it without any shipping charges but have to pay uncle sam but its still cheaper than having it shipped.

are longer control arms necessary for 3"? I mean is it a have to kinda thing or preference?

You dont need new control arms with 3" lifts. Anything more than that and you will need new control arms, sway bar drop bracket, pitman arm, and track bar drop bracket i believe.

To answer your question i think it's preference.
