Default Short in ECU

My truck will not pass inspection. The codes showed bad o2 sensors so I replaced them. It still will not pass inspection so I took it to a mechanic and he said there was a short in the ECU. They said it would cost $600 for a new ECU and another $600 for installation and programing. Anybody ever heard of a problem like this? Any suggestions that cost less than $1200?

you can get one from a junkyard for like 100 bucks maybe...it takes about 10 minutes to install, and i think the programming they mean is putting in the deathflash....have you looked into the plenum gasket? this will foul 02 sensors....

Ok,a couple of things jump out at me here. As far as the O2 sensors and codes, what codes was it giving? Also what won't pass inspection? Is the CEL still on? Or did it come on after you replaced the sensors? Where I live(New Jersey) they check emissions and other functions via the OBD II connector, and if you have the CEL on, they won't even inspect it. Call me crazy, but its a pretty far leap from bad O2 sensors to a new ECM. Was the PCM cleared after replacing the O2 Sensors? Did you replace both? What if any codes does it show now? CEL light on? If you do have to go the ECM route, a few places advertive refurbished units for less than $600. As far as $600 for installation and programming? Well is pulling 2 plugs(IIRC) and unbolting 4 bolts is worth $600? I am in the wrong business, as far as programming most ECM/PCM units I have seen even used are ready to go.
