Default Steering problem update (FYI)

Folks,

I just wanted to post some information that may save some others time and money. I had a steering issue where I would lose my power steering once and a while. I can't tell you how many close calls I had in parking lots. I might go a week or 2 with no trouble then I would have a day where this would happen 10 times. Sometimes I could turn to the left but not to the right. sometimes if I turned the wheel back a forth it would start working. sometimes I could feel a little pop and it would work.

I flushed the system twice, I replaced the pump on advise from a local parts store that has reliable counter people. I unhooked the pitman arm to make sure it was not the linkage. The problem was you never knew if you fixed it or if it just went away on its own. It finnally got bad enough that I could really test it.

Turned out the steering box was defective. It was only 2 years old (from NAPA) and had about 10K on it. NAPA replaced it for free under warranty but I had spent some $ and a crap load of time getting there.

I searched every where while working on this. I did not find much that helped. I thought I would post this for the next guy.

Gary
