please help before i torch it
Hi, i have a 1995 ram 1500 5.2. soon after i bought this truck the torque converter started rattling so i replaced it. In the process of installing it the crsnk position sensor was broken so i replaced it with one from the same truck at the scrap yard. I changed the filter, adjusted the bands, reset the comp ( all as per haynes ). the problem is the truck runs and shifts fine when it is cold, however, when its at running temp it wants to stall and doesn't want to shift properly. ( wont shift until it reaches around 3200 rpm ). It also has the smell of running rich. Any help would be greatly appreiciated
When you adjusted the bands...did you use a micrometer torque wrench that reads in IN/lbs NOT ft/lbs.
It is supposed to be torqued to 72 in/lbs then backed off 2 1/2 turns from that. If you use a ft/lb torque wrench, you will have to torque it to 6 ft/lbs and I don't know a torque wrench that goes down that low that can be accurate.

The running rich part is usually normal after you reset the computer. It has to learn the proper air/fuel ratio for your truck again, and until it does, it will be running off a default setting thats a bit rich.
i forgot to mention that it only runs rich when it is warm. Also, I only adjusted the low/reverse bands. do I also need to adjust the mid range band? Would the TPC have anything to do with it running rich when warm?
would the tpc also cause the truck to surge at slow speed/slight acceleration? also noticed it is running rich to a point as to blow black smoke when idling

TPS = throttle position sensor. It controls alot more than just the throttle though, the ECU uses it basicly as it's bitch when it comes to shift points, idling, and some fuel to air.
it's cheap enough to replace, try that and see what happens. You can find it at any local parts store IE autozone or advance depending on what part of the country you're in.

Hey take pic's of it and post them we love pics, also if you got time fill out your profile information about your location and year/model/engine size of your truck, more people will be willing to answer your questions if they can see exactly what they'er workin with at all times.
