Default What is with the automatic trans

The trans in my girlfriends 98 SST just lost reverse and has been rebuilt a few times so its probabably the end of the line for this truck, its either going to be junked or sold to someone who wants to fix it and look for a 72 to 80 shortbed. All I have heard was complaints about the latemodel mopar automatic with overdrive trans so is there anything that can be done to make them last more then a couple years. I am going to try to find a used trans or convert to a manual trans if we keep it but I am tired of these latemodels.

I dont know but it must have been as the last trans rebuild lasted 5 years, the bean counters must have made all of the big 3 cut some corners as they all had problems. I had gotten over 200,000 miles on the old 3 speed automatics with just fluid changes and nothing else but these late model trans are just junk compared to the old 3 speeds,I might see if I can get a 727 t/f to fit it and forget about overdrive or use a first generation automatic with overdrive thats not computer controlled as I think they were alot better. What years of trans will work in this 98 as there are a few 94 and up being parted on craigslist in my area.

Why would you junk a SS/T? I guess thats how they do it up in Dirty Dayton...

Sounds like a bad re-build. Get it re-built by someone who you can trust and flush the system every 30,000 miles.

It might get junked or parted because it will take too much money to repair, besides the trans she let a friend drive it and tore up the body and I dont have the time to fix it so it might have to go. I dont know much about the newer vehicles so I want to find her a nice pre 1980 D100 shortbed that is easier to repair and wont have to constantly rebuild the trans. If we decicide to not repair it I will post in on here for sale before doing anything but I am tired of her latemodels that do not run, along with the truck she has a 96 Saturn SL2 with a blown head gasket that I refuse to touch and will have to pay someone to fix it. If anyone has a clean 72 to 80 D100 shortbed and would be interested in this 98 SS/T let me know and I have the body parts for it.

Why are these late model trans so expensive to rebuild, she said the last rebuild was 1700.00. I pulled the C-6 out of my galaxie and was gone through including the convertor for a little over 300.00 so I am going to call that shop and see what they will charge for this one but I have a feeling it will need replaced as it had a noise like and catalytic convertor shield rattling but now I am thinking it was the trans. I had a 92 F150 with the E4OD and the local trans shop wanted 1600.00 to go through it and for a 1000.00 truck I said no way and drove it to about 275,000 miles and sold it and bought something that had a cheaper trans if it would ever needed to be gone through.

stop rebuilding them! there are components inside that aren't properly checked and then reused in the rebuild. Just buy a reman from someplace reputable.

I will look into a reman trans and did find a used one but kind of dont want to go that route as we might be in the same shape a few months down the road,I think I will get her Saturn going and it will give me the time to get the damaged sheetmetal replaced and looking like a decent truck again. While she is not driving it I will look for a parts truck with a manual trans as she likes the idea so as I calm down the truck will be saved but I am about fed up with latemodels as I drive 60s on back vehicles.

Alot of trans shops don't rebuilt these Chrysler trannies right to begin with. Most will throw in a rebuild kit and call it good. These trannies are very sensitive to shaft end play and tolerances that most tranny shops don't bother checking during a rebuild. Thus leading to premature failure.

I was thinking about taking a course at a local community college to rebuild the trans I will be putting in my 55 Ford so if I do I will have two trans to rebuild.
