Default convert to cummins?

I just found a 93 12v for 700$ already pulled..My question is how hard would it be to change the 5.9 gas i have over now to that cummins. A complete swap. what would all have to change.. the motor i asume comes with the electronics.

You would need the tranny that goes with the cummins as well. As far as electronics, you would need to figure out how you can mate up the engine part of the PCM to your PCM that controls the rest of the buttons on the truck.

It is a very hard job. You would also need a stand alone fuel management system and a beefed up front suspension. The cummins weighs A LOT more than the regular engine. You would need the 2500 series coil springs and shocks for the front.

ALso, you would need the 2500 series transfer case and differentials.

With the 650ft/lbs of torque on the cummins, you would break every driveline component on your truck.

ANSWER: NO....unless you are buying a truck with the cummins.

I have seen a thread where someone did this swap on a 1500. He really knew what he was doing though. He had to replace pretty much everything up front. Had to make custom things like engine mounts, that sort. It worked out great for him, but took him tons of work.

This is capable for an experienced mechanic, otherwise I would say it would be tough to impossible for just a regular DIY guy. But who knows, with the right research and planning anything is possible. Throw me a PM if you want the link to that thread.

I was thinking that you were swapping with a CURRENT cummins. That would break every driveline component in your truck.

But even a 1993 will require you to get the wholefront end redone. It is not worth it. Just buy one with a cummins in it. That will actually be cheaper.

Actually it would be cheaper to buy a dodge with a cummins and has about 300K miles on it. then swap that new one into it.

You already have a 2500 so your axles should be fine as will your suspension. the 1993 is a mechanical engine so there really wouldn't be much to hook up to the pcm. you definaltely will need the tranny and transfer case, and i would imagine the front and rear drive shafts. Might be worth popping into the cummins forum on this site and ask the guys that run them how difficult it might be to do the swap.

WOW!!! I would think it would be a hella lot of work. Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier just to buy one with a Cummins in it? Just my .02
