Default Ideas removing broken off rear diff speed sensor...

While removing the speed sensor on 99 Ram 1500 the whole sensor did not come out of the rear diff. See attached picture. Sensor broke off right at the red O-ring. So remainder of sensor is stuck in the rear diff.

Curious if any one has any idea how I might be able to get it out. And does any one know if it is possible of pushing the remaining piece down into the diff case (really dont want to have to pull the diff apart to get it out) or is it set to where it will not go in any further?

Thanks for any ideas.

just remove the diff cover and drain the fluid. remove the broken piece, clean the magnet, etc, reseal and refill. its good to service it every 3 years or so.

i had the SAME thing happen to me. I was able to get a scewdriver in there put tension on it and sort of "twist" it out...Wedge the screwdriver in it, and try to twist or pop it out. (didnt have to remove diff cover)

I just change the diff oil 3 weeks ago before I moved. Hoping not to go thru the hassle of changing it again. I'll try the screwdriver trick.

Thanks for the input all.

Screw driver trick worked perfect. Though it was going to be a lot tougher to get out but wasn't.

Replacement cleared check engine, ABS and break light in dash display. Also fixed speedometer to full function from before when it would only register speeds over 25 mph.

Have to say this site has been a great help keeping my '99 Ram 1500 on the road with 167k miles and counting!

Good job glad you got it fixed, now fill out your profile information about your truck and people will be more willing to answer your questions.

Hope you stick around

I had this happen to me tonight on my 2001 dodge ram 1500 (5.9L)...searched the internet and found 2 posts on it...this one saved my bacon!

The screwdriver trick worked!!! I had to actually contort myself to sit up, while on ramps and be able to put my eye on it to see that it WAS moving...as when I was doing it from below I didn't think it was...did it at nit, with a flashlight and screwdriver...

Although the sensor didn't fix my "No Bus" and eratic amps/lights flickering...I don't have to add draining the diff to the rest of my problem solving!

Thanks guys...it is SOOO cool to have people share there fixes, I am truly grateful!!! I wanted to reply to let others know this actually worked for me as well!!!
