Default Good info for Noobs and guys wanting to buy a 2nd gen

Alright, Figure we should start one of these. I am just going to put on a little tidbit of what I have seen owning 2 second gens:

1. The 1996, bought at 92K miles: The engine was great (mopar PCM, exhaust and injectors). Had a plenum issue, but it had 90K miles when i got it. At about 100K, things started to break (also, tranny was replaced at 70K with prev owner):
--Water pump
--Torque converter (still under 36K warranty when the tranny was replaced)
--U-joints
at 150K it got horrible
--Tranny problems. Looks like they are good for 70K intervals
-- Transfer case was leaking a lot.

2. The 2001, bought last year with 41K miles and a warranty to 99K and 2011:
The truck does not have the power of my 1996 5.2, but it is stock. It was the cleanest dodge i have ever seen of that year. and VERY LOW miles.
*****JUST BECAUSE IT LOOKS CLEAN AND THERE ARE VERY LOW MILES, DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT WILL NEVER FAIL YOU. TIME IS A FACTOR*******
Things that broke with prev owner:
1. Fuel pump at 30K
2. Transfer case seal (twice) and Transfer case tailhousing
3. Water Pump
Things that broke between when i bought it and 48K:
1. Transfer case seal (was leaking when i bought it)
2. Power steering pump BLEW UP: Paid 100 deductible for new one
3. Transfer case was cracked at 48K: Yup, I don't even take it offroading. Neither did the old man prev owner.

All in all, i have only been out of pocket $10540. Cost of the truck was 10K and the deductibles and parts not covered (hose from power steering was 190).

Since I move a lot (being in the Army). I will be getting the F1 airgap in another year when I do my move to Indiana. I haven't noticed anything with the plenum, but you never know. plus It is a great upgrade!!!

Will do more upgrades once the warranty goes NEXT march. I was thinking of doing an extended warranty from a third party JUST for the tranny, AC and Power steering. Noit sure how much that costs.

MORAL OF THE STORY: The eyeball check is just skin deep. Drive the thing and get on these forums to find out all the little TICKS. THis thread should be a list of all the TICKS.

I think i will do a "How to buy a 2nd gen" DIY later today.

happy easter:
