Evap leak any ideas
My 2001 dodge ram 1500 4 wheel drive 5.9 truck has p0442 small evap leak. It used to have a small leak and a big leak p0455. I have replaced fuel cap smoked it and replaced some evap lines I also had a mechanic look at it and he told me to replace the leak detection pump. I did and i now have only the p0442 small leak. Any ideas. My smog is due now cant figure this out. Mechanics want to much money.
I had that too. Look inside the engine bay on the passenger side where the intake duct is. The EVAP canister is in that area I believe. Look at all the rubber hoses connected to that jumbled mess right there. I had a small crack in mine and it threw that code.
EDIT: Nevermind. Should've read the post correctly. I guess you already changed the lines.

make sure you dont have any outstanding recalls! thanx to this site and dodge .com i imput my vin into the website and it found 2 oustanding recalls on my 96 one of which was my evap canister! they are fixing for free
My small leak was coming from two places... under the hood near the leak detection pump. The second location was where the hoses connect to canister, which was not found until after I did all the hoses under the hood.
IIRC, the CEL won't come on until it detects the leak 3x in a row. If you have a reader, you should be able to clear it before you go to DEQ. They may turn the car off, and restart it, which would put you at 2 detections, which should not set your CEL, and should get you through the test.

My 2001 Ram 1500 kept throwing OBD code P0442 which prevented me from getting an inspection sticker in MA. The first item changed was the gas cap. After 60 miles the engine light came on again and it threw the code P0442 again. (code can be displayed in odometer by cycling ignition 5 times within 5 seconds). If you start the vehicle you can feel the vacuum system operating (components are on the passenger side wall under the hood). The charcol canister is located on the passenger side, right behind the passenger door, mounted to the frame rail under the truck. 4 bolts removes the two components. Visually inspect these for cracks which will cause the EVAP leak code. Also re-set the rubber boot that connects to the import port. Replace the boot if it looks worn. Cleaned the canister, manually blew into the port to dislodge any particles, reconnected everything, drove 85+ miles and received the inspection sticker. Total time - 90 minutes. Total cost - $12 (for gas cap).
