Default Need tranny help fast

ok so went to change the filter in my 01 ram 1500 today, with the 5.2 auto and 46RE tranny, and i found this stuck to my magnet, its about 2 inches long, and 3/16 wide, and about 3/32 thick, looks like part of some sort of ring, havent put the truck back together yet hoping to hear from someone soon before i do

Hard to tell from the pic, but a clutch pack retainer snap ring is the only thing that comes to mind. Definetly not good, has this tranny been rebuilt recently?

Definetly not a good thing when stuff is laying in your pan, I'd take it back before your warranty is up!

so after farther review, it is a snap ring, however after puttin the truck even farther into the air, and going over the bottom of the valve body with a flashlight, there is no possible way a piece this big came through and made it into the pan, without trashing my tranny, im assuming a rebuild has already been done, and this was possibly left behind,

its possible, i just did my tranny flush, and my tranny was rebuilt 22K ago...i had two pieces of green plastic that had a twist design in my pan....and even MonteC, who is a trans specialist, said it must have been left behind.

So it is possible it was left behind, but think about it, if something that big was left behind, that cant say too good on how they did the rebuild if they were that careless.

Good thing your under warranty, but on a side note. There is no excuse to have something like that "left behind"! A tranny rebuild requires a full tear down and ALL parts cleaned and inspected. Nightmares like this make me so glad I do all work on my vehicles myself rather than relying on "shops" that are no more qualified to work on my truck than a monkey at the zoo.

Sorry bud that WASNT left behind. That is the snap ring for the overdrive direct clutch. Very common for it to fail, it is a waved snap ring and over time will break. Alto makes an updated snap ring your builder probably didnt install and instead reused the old one. That snap ring does break and WILL travel down with out destroying the unit. If you let it keep going, eventually one day the truck will go to shift into forth and fourth gear wont be there.

If you saw what ive seen, you would have nightmares. I "fix" transmission for some local tranny shops when they take something apart and they have no clue how it goes back together. I got a BMW unit all torn apart in a box once. I had a guy come by with a little tiny piece off of a mercedes, and asked me where it went because he put the unit back together and couldnt figure out where it went. Of course i told him.
