Default what is this noise?

I have a 1997 dodge ram 2500 4x4. A few weeks a go when coming to a stop from say around 40 under normal driving, at about 15 m.p.h. i would hear a sort of popping metal on metal sound. I thought it could be u-joints. To start i removed my front drive shaft to see if that fixed it. I thought it did, the popping went away, or so i thought, and i figured id fix the drive shaft once i got the money to send it out, cause i am not dealing with those u-joints in the front. Well i was driving yesterday, and sure enough, slowed down for a red light and the popping sound came right back, just not as loud. I'm probably going to do the u-joints in the rear shaft cause its been a few years, and that will eliminate that possibility if anything. The u-joints in the front axles are only a few months old. I am thinking it could be something in my t-case. If it is my case, i am on a TIGHT budget, and my case is big bucks, even used at a junkyard, but i am mechanically inclined, and pulling the case in my drive way wouldn't be a big deal. So anyhow, how hard would it be to rebuild my case, what are the specs on it (slpines etc.), and how much would it cost for a rebuild kit? Or if you don't think it is the case what could it be? Any help would be really appreciated! thank you!

well, the break calipers are tight. while i was under there i grabbed the output for the front drive shaft on the t-case and moved it a 1/4 turn either way and it was making the the ticking popping noise i keep hearing.
