Rattle when accelerating hard?
I was hoping I could get some outside opinions.
When I romp down on the gas real hard (ie: passing a car) there is a certain point in the rpm range that I get a sound like a loose heat shield, but I checked all them over and found none loose. I've heard the phrase thrown around on here before that it sounds like stones in an aluminum can. Is this what pinging sounds like? [&:] I've checked down in my throttle body and haven't seen any oil and I recently checked my plugs and found no fouling from a plenum gasket failure.....
Am I just being paranoid, or could this be a connection to the plenum gasket failure?

could be pinging, put 91 or better octane gas in it and see if it goes away... is your truck stock? what mods do you have?
if it's not pinging, then it could be your cat has gone bad. but usually if it has you'll hear it at idle or just off idle.

Its bone stock. I haven't done a thing aftermarket to it. It sounds kinda like its coming from the center of the truck. Underneath of me when I'm sitting in it. The truck only has 58,000 on it. Could the Cat be bad already?
yes it could be... in park, rev it up to 2500 or so rpm and listen under the truck... if it rattles, then your cat is bad... you can also test it by measuring the inlet temp and outlet temps... there should be a 50 or so degree difference with the output being hotter than the input. if the input is hotter than the output, your cat is clogged or broken inside and is not flowing correctly.
i checked my cat by hitting it with the handle of a screwdriver. it rattled every time i was on the gas relatively hard. changing that was the best thing ive ever done.

I can't believe that a truck with under 60k can have a bad cat already. I don't deny it, its just a bummer. I have access to a temp gun, so I will check that out. Thanks guys.
I've read a bit about the cats rattling. My 04 Does it to at times when under hard acceleration.

I just want to squeeze in to this topic. I have an 01 5.2 4x4., when I accelerate hard it sounds like a hand full of marbles rattling in the engine. I thought it might be pinging so I used 91 octane. it didn't change. I hear it could be the plenim gasket but I understand it's to new. I have done NO mods to this truck. Thoughts??
