Drop in oil pressure once engine is warm

Default Drop in oil pressure once engine is warm

Hi. I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 (V6) with 167,000 miles. I bought it used and it wasn't taken care of very well. Once the engine warms up, whenever I come to a stop or the rpm otherwise goes below 900, the oil pressure drops to zero. This only happens after the truck has warmed up. If I power brake it to just over 900, the pressure goes right back up. I have had the switch and the oil pump replaced. The mechanic thought that it may be sucking in some air somewhere. A friend says there's probably a screen somewhere that's clogged or there was some sludge still in the oil line that has clogged up the new oil pump. Any ideas? TIA

If the oil pump has been replaced, they should have made sure the screen was clean at the same time. Most likely the bearings are getting worn in the engine and clearances are increasing causing the oil pressure to be low when the oil is warm and has lower viscosity.

I'm assuming you have plenty of oil in the crank case. Next oil change add a can of Restore or a similair product and see if that helps. Or get a little more aggressive and add some Sea Foam to the crankcase, run it for 100 miles, change the oil and add some Restore -- some people add a quart of the Lucas Oil additive.
My pressure starts out at 60 psi then drops to 40 psi once it warms up but only went to zero when i would come to a stop and I'd burn through too much oil due to the plenum problem.

I started using this product from Hughes Auto and I have had really good luck with it.

EXTREME PRESSURE OIL ADDITIVE



Over the past 10 years or so all cam manufacturers have seen an increase in flat tappet cam failures, particularly in the high performance arena. We have spent close to a year researching oils and additives to try and find a product that could eliminate this problem. We have found it! Hughes Engines Extreme Pressure Lubricant is a state of the art additive package that is compatible with standard (mineral based) oils or synthetics. To complement this highly specialized additive package a proven friction modifier, Micron MolyŽ is further blended into the oil treatment. Micron MolyŽ is a liquid soluble type of moly that plates to the metal surfaces of the engine. Once plated, the moly forms a long lasting lubricant film which prevents the metal surfaces from coming into contact with each other. By preventing metal to metal contact, damaging frictional wear is eliminated, which leads to less downtime and longer engine life. This additive should be used with all flat tappet camshafts. We suggest using this with your break-in oil and at every oil change. One pint will treat up to 5 quarts of oil.



Part of the problem with all the oil that we use in or vehicles is they (our brilliant government) have taken all the zinc out of it.



I switched over to Amsoil 10w 40 premium High zinc. You will notice the difference.
