I am from Ft smith. I think you said you were from Clarksville. Not too far. bout an hour west of you. I have a Recruiting Station in Russelville, so I know the area.
I might PM you if I need help with the welding and if you are free for some extra cash on a sat/sun.

Am I the only one that thinks this is a bad idea?
Don't get me wrong you gotta learn somehow. I just wouldn't mess around with a few pieces of metal then go welding on my truck. Some people make it sound so easy, it's tricky. I have 2 welders and still can't weld to save my ***

But it is just welding a cat. The worse case, I make a ton of holes and I need to get anotehr cat. But i will probably just be on the lookout for a welder who can help out.
F YOU!!!!
Do you have a tech school in your area? Go take take a basic welding class. I took one a few years ago and it was one of the best things I ever did. All the class was, was 4 hours every saturday for 9 weeks. We spent nearly the whole time welding. I learned stick, mig, and tig and now I am competent at all three. The class was about $150, and was well worth it. Then go out and buy a small mig, really any brand will do. The whole lincoln vs miller ect is pretty close to the ford vs chevy vs dodge arguement. For most of what you will probably be doing it will be fine. I would really suggest an auto darkening helmet though. It makes it much easier for the beginner. They are not all expensive either. Cheap tool stores usually carry them for a reasonalbe price. They may not last forever but they will sheild your eyes properly (you will be able to tell if they dont).
I would love to learn so I can do **** on m own. I always have to have other people weld for me. My one bro in law bought a mig from our old job and does my welding now. i would love to learn so I can smooth out the engine bay of my Mustang.
I work every other sat and every night during the week so I see it tough going to class

Doing the welding on the truck is a bad idea if you don't know what you're doing, overhead is probably the hardest position to weld in. Plus all the slag and crap falls on you. Tack it up and pull it out to finish. Just make sure the battery is disconnected before you weld on the truck or you can fry the computer.
