Default are these terms the same?

Hey everybody. I have a question, and it may be a dumb question so feel free to criticize and scrutinize, but I simply don't know. Is the plenum gasket the same thing, or another name for the intake manifold gasket? I had an oil leak a few years back and a good friend who LOVES working on vehicles said it was the intake manifold gasket, and also the timing cover gasket. So he was happy to dive in there and change them for me. So after reading the plenum gasket posts it got me thinking if that's what he changed a few years back or not. I know some stuff about engines but obviously not very much haha. thanks!

Yes and no, depends on whoever is using the term. Some people call it that intake manifold gasket. I've seen the gaskets that go on the front and back of the block under the manifold also called the intake manifold gaskets, as well as the gaskets that go between the heads and the intake manifold. Just depends on who's talking about it. Can you just ask your friend what it was that he replaced back then?

It is kinda confusing. Some gasket companies will refer to them as upper and lower intake manifold gaskets, with the upper being the plenum gasket.

yes and no is the answer.

There are gaskets that go between the intake and the heads, then there is the plenum gasket. That is because our intakes are two piece. THe plenum (the bottom of the intake) and the big intake that you see when you look at the engine (keg).

It is confusing. It took me a year of being on this forum before I understood what the hell people were talking about. Good thing you asked now instead of staying quiet in fear of looking dumb.

ok thanks guys. He showed me what he was going to replace but because it was so long ago i can't remember. I want to say it was the gasket between the heads and manifold. I'll see if i can get ahold of him soon.
