Default front axle nut size

hello;
i keep reading posts on here where all say the front axle nut is 1 11/16...i have a '97 4X4 1/2T and yesterday i bought a 1 11/16 socket from sears and low and behold, its a sniffle too small...i bought a 1 3/4 and it fits but loosely, a sniffle too big, if you will...i assume its some sort of metric nut, but no way would the 1 11/16 fit it...am i missing something here..and if it is metric, does anyone know what size so i can stop a snap on man and buy one?

thanks.

if you got a dial calliper measure the 1 11/16th according to the conversion deal i just used it's a 43 or something pretty close. unfortunately you can't find them I looked and looked and couldn't find one. honestly I'd go with the 1 3/4 and see if that'll work if not bout the only other thing you can do is beat the 1 11/16 on there. it's not a good thing to do but if it comes to it you might have to. a chrysler dealership might have one you could borrow right quick to break it loose and then put the cotter key back in it so you can get it home.

43mm
But maybe a cheaper 1 11/16 would fit
Is it a 6 point you got or a 12 point,

thats odd, i got my 1 11/16 from sears as well, and i had no problem...try a little bit more,keep spinning it little by little until it slides on. I bet it will fit.

i'll give it a shot again, but i spun it like 5 times and it wouldn't go...the 1 3/4 would but again, with some play...appreciate the 43mm part...36 is way too small...
thanks

i'd try to tap the 1 11/16" on.. it's only .005" smaller than the 43mm, It should fit.
all sockets have slop in them, 12 points have more wiggle room though.

I used the 1 3/4" cause I couldn't find a place local that had anything else.
