Default aftermarket gauges

need some help from guys that have installed aftermarket gauges (oil pressure, water temp etc..) I want to put an oil pressure gauge in my truck...long story short, if I run 10w30 in the summer, I have low pressure at idle, low enough to trip the factory sending unit. I've had it checked by a pro shop who used a mechanical gauge and they said I have pressure at idle, so that's not the problem. Also sometimes it just drops and shoots back up out of nowhere, like a glitch. I have lots of kms on the motor and know I should rebuild it but I am laid off work and in school so money's tight. The problem is I am tired of hearing the warning bell and seeing the "check gauges" light coming on and would rather have a gauge that I trust, autometer or sunpro etc. But I am hearing that I can't just disconnect the cluster from the sending unit, and I have to use them together (with a t joint at the block etc) or it'll set off the warning lights and bells. I'm sure somebody out there has run into my problem... any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanx
