Default why is it called death flash

ok ive done some reading and came across death flash in a lot of threads...from what i understand its dodge way of "fixing" the plenum issue.....it retards the spark 4 ....so far correct? but why is it called death flash...will the engine go to hell if you dont fix the plenum and if you have the death flash you wont know that the plenum is bad....just wondering.....oh and just went out and looked and didnt see any hand written sticker anywhere in the engine compartment.
thanks
