I am wondering if anyone has ever removed the catalytic convertors on a Ram 2500 V-10. The oxygen sensors are before the convertors and removing the convertors shouldn't effect them. I was told that the check engine light will come on because of the reduced backpressure. I am wanting to install a different exhaust system on the truck. Any other mods that can be done to a V-10 would be appreciated.

 

You were lied to. There should be o2 sensors before and after the cat converters. The ones before should control the A/F mixture, and the ones after are just there to verify that the cat is working, which is why you'd get a CEL if you removed the cat.

Backpressure has nothing to do with it. On a side note, backpressure is the enemy. Ignore people who say you need backpressure, because they don't know what they're talking about. It's a side effect and detrimental to performance.

 

On a '99 Ram with a V-10, there are two oxygen sensors just down from each exhaust manifold and none post-catalytic convertor. This is according to the service manual and inspecting my truck. My '98 wth a 360 did have one pre and post catalytic convertor. On the V-10 there is also an air pump that pumps fresh air into the convertors to lower the carbon menoxide levels exiting the tail pipe.
