oil psi question
okay so my oil psi is usually right at 40 at idle.so the other day it was like 104 freakin degrees, and my truck ran temp up to atleast 220 sitting in traffic and barely moving. well i look down and my oil lights on and i freak out but the psi is only at about 36-37 psi. as soon as i touch the gas it goes right up to 40 and light goes off. now ive done some research on here and alot of people say oil pressure switch and stuff. BUT when my trucks at 200 degrees it never does this, only when it gets hot as hell sitting in traffic. SO does anyone have any idea if its the pump possibly going bad? since it only does it when hot.
I don't believe anything under 20psi is something to worry about at idle. I believe the general rule is 10psi per 1000rpm. I'm sure someone with more expertise will jump in. I also don't know if the oil light is connected to the same sensor as the gauge. Maybe a bad wire?
I'm thinking that with it being that hot and you were not really moving that the oil temp was enough to make the oil thinner therefore the pump wouldn't pump at the same pressure. When did you change your oil last, it might be time for a change?
i was thinking the same thing on the temp thinning out the oil, but i just did an oil change a week or two ago when this first happened. i guess im going to have to try to do a coolant flush maybe and try and get some new coolant in there, see if maybe it keeps my truck cooler. its just annoying seeing this light pop on when its hot as hell out. especially since it never did this before
