Default 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Brake Issue

The other day while driving home as I was stopping for a red light, the break pedal sunk to the ground. As I was about to stop, it wouldn't and I slided thru the red light(Was 7am on a Sunday morn thank God). The brakes still worked, but, you had to press way down. The brake light stays illuminated as well now. I did notice when I got home that the brake fluid resovoir was completely empty/dry. Will just putting more brake fluid in take care of this problem or is there definitely a leak somewhere? I've not noticed any fluid on the ground.

This truck is not used that often...maybe once every two weeks.

There is most likely a leak somewhere, brake fluid doesn't really just disappear on its own. May be the master cylinder or who knows what else. Put some fluid in, have a helper push the pedal up and down constantly, and track where that stuff is coming out.

Let me move this to 2nd gen to help ya get some more answers.

Check the line on drivers side above the gas tank, in the frame rail.
When this one goes it's hard to see as the fluid will stay in the rail and on top of the tank.

^+1 on that location.

park that truck immediately and don't drive it till fixed.
to find the leak - put some more fluid in the master cylinder. park on pavement. pump the brakes several times. look for a puddle of fluid.
odds are good its the rear line on the drivers side.

do a search on brake line. (and break line LOL). you can buy a collection of standard lines of various lengths and assemble a replacement alongside the old one. no need to even remove the old one... you can buy an OEM replacement at the dealer and maybe summit, but it will be a lot more expesive than generic line at the parts store.
