screwy trans... what else is new

hello all. my trans has been slipping slightly and when shifting between 2nd and 3rd it bounces back and forth between the 2 gears a few times before it shifts completly. a freind had told me that my trans has adjustable clutch bands and this could be an easy fix. anyone have some insight on this subject? p.s the trans has 194k
