This is the best intake I've run by far.

$105 dollars with the k&N filter. Flows better than the Round cleaner, colder air too.

Agreed.

I am not knocking that a 14x3 won't give you more power, because it surely will, and will help mileage. But you better be on the throttle all the time to feel that power. From my experiences with both, I have found my CAI, and the factory unit is much better for every day driving, and I can honestly say my S&B has just as much power as the 14x3 at WOT.

And my Scan-gauge confirmed that my S&B had lower Intake Manifold temps. Went from 163 degrees to 124 degrees on the highway.

For me, the 14x3 open element worked great(power wise), but in order to feel the benefits of the added power I always had to be in the upper RPM range, about 3k+. This really didn't suit my driving habits so I put the factory unit back on until I could afford an S&B intake. The stock unit is very restrictive and does not even flow as much as the stock throttle body at wide open throttle. If you are on the gas a lot and love putting your foot down all the time, than the 14x3 is for you. But for normal every day driving the stocker is great. I wanted the best of both worlds so I went with an S&B CAI. Flows just as much as the 14x3, and has a nice long tube to help bring on the torque similar to a stock setup.

Just from my experiences. If you were to run your truck down the 1/4 mile it might be a good idea to throw the 14x3 on.

Everyones opinions on this subject vary. If you are curious about the 14x3 open element, buy it, and try it out for yourself. It may work out very well for you seeing that you live in Minnesota which has cooler average temps, but down here in the Florida heat the open element just wasn't cutting it. It is still a great mod for the money though! I won't knock that.

If you are interested in the S&B intake, PM me and we will talk about it. I don't want to clutter up this thread more than I already have.

That MP 14x3 is purdy but I tow and need the low end torque as I tow and use it everyday (business). Maybe someday when I retire it, haha.

Remember though, a '97 318 only gets its 300 lbs. of torque at 3200RPM anyways, and the horsepower doesn't top out until even later.

Very true, but under normal driving conditions, I still feel the S&B or Volant is a better setup for everyday driving and mileage. If I ran my truck down the strip I wouldn't be opposed to throwing the 14x3 back on.

it feels like it has more giddy up in all RPMS with the CAI, i rather have the low end as my trucks not a race car, i just like having that throttle responce and happy to know its there , were as before im like WTF happend mytruck is a dog..

i know you can get a spectra CAI for 115 some people love it... but if you dont have the money spend 30 bucks on the 14x3 ,it is better than stock so either route you will be happy ,im just giving my .02 cents
