Default tranny problem?

Hi guys,

First time Ram owner, just bought a 98 Ram 2500 v10 2x4 and since I got it dirt cheap some probelms were expected. I know it's not diesel, but since it's the same transmission, I figured someone may help.

Here is the problem:

When I go down the road and floor the gas (for example if merging or passing a slow car) - nothing happens - I hit the gas pedal all the way down and absolutelly no reaction from the truck! If I hold the gas pedal for 4-5 seconds, all of a sudden there is a loud BANG (like two metal pieces banging on each other) and the truck will start to pick up speed rapidly. This will happen 8 out of 10 times I floor the truck.

If it weren't for the loud bang, I would think it's the tranny, but since I know close to nothing about trucks and don't know of any honest transmission shops, I figured I ask here first for some suggestions, i.e. something I can work with when I take it to the shop - I don't want to be charged a few grand because of my inexperience and then just change a $100 part

Thanks in advance!

P.S. The ATfluid level is fine and I even added some Lucas. I just had a brand new battery put in, as well. Since I am new to the forum, I am not sure if it's a dead pedal, but because of the banging noise, I don't think it's electrical problem.
