Anyone try getting exhaust in GA?!?!
I have been calling a few local shops to get estimates on running a new exhaust for my truck. The first shop i called told me that a federal law that passed two years ago requires them to install cats on each pipe and they are not alowed to remove any cat or emmissions equipment with out putting brand new stuff on. We do not have any emmissions testing around here and there are plenty of loud trucks around.
The second shop i called i told him what i was looking at for my new exhaust and he started asking if i worked for the EPA and i said hell no and said i could just call him when the truck was finished and hung up.
I was wondering if there were any other people from GA or other states that have run into this or heard of this law.
Mind you, the first guy told me that no cat on your car could be up to a 100,000 dollar fine and five years in jail! Is it even possible to get the exhaust you want now or do we have to do it ourselves?

Never heard of that law in particular. In Texas, if you get exuast work done in an emissions county, they can't touch anything cat-forward unless they are replacing a failed cat. Some shops have to weld the rearward pipe to the cat or pipe following the cat to ensure it's "legal" when you leave their shop.
I'm sure there's a penalty of some sort for shops that remove cats and weld in straight pipes, but I haven't run into any that wouldn't do the work if the price was right. With that said, getting the shop to weld triangle brackets on boths pipe ends has become next to impossible as of late which led me to do my own work over the years.
Let us know how it works out...

I cant say I've heard of this before. I know that it is illegal to remove the cat tho. The shop that I had my flowmaster exhaust put on would not straight pipe my cat. So, after several months of patience, my buddy in Americus, GA told me about an exhaust shop where he lives that will cut them out. So I drove 150 miles south to have the operation done, no one would do where I live around Forsyth county. So they charged me like $150 to straight pipe it. (The cat was dual inlet single outlet) so it's a bit more expensive than what my buddy paid to have his chopped out (his was single in single out)
shops won't remove a cat unless they replace it with a new one. it is a huge fine if they're caught, so they're not going to risk it over $50.
you can always do it yourself, or find individuals that will do it. check around the hispanic shops in rome, dalton, gainesville. they don't give a $hit, they're already illegals - they'll do anything.
as long as you put back the same number of cats as what came on the truck, there is nothing illegal about it. so if your truck came with single exhaust, and they put back one exhaust and one cat - ok. now, if your truck came with single and you want true duals, then you'd have to put on 2 cats, and install the O2 in an X- or H- pipe.
if you don't install your O2 sensors correctly, your truck won't run worth a $hit.

Aw hell, I know a shop in Vidalia where they'll do anything you want. He won't quote it over the phone for fear of getting trapped, but if go in person, no problem...
Nice guys there, they used to do all my company vehicles when I had a networking business there...

theres a guy on three notch road in catoosa county that does really good work and pretty reasonable on price. he MAY do it for you, but im not real sure. he does exhaust work out of a garage behind his house, so id say he's not as uptight as some other places.
Legally they are not allowed to remove a cat and not replace it, you will probrably have better luck going in person rather than over the phone and most times they will only accept cash and do it under the table, then it makes it harder for you go back and get them in trouble
Some will say they wont but sometimes if you ask them if the vehicle is brought in without the cat, they will do the exhaust
