Default 01 cummins, gauges dieing/turnoff

Just picked up a 2001 2500 cummins, auto, 2wd, all stock, 330k miles.

The gauges randomly die, but if you smack the dash above the passenger side airbag the return to normal. The airbag light comes on right before they die. First the speedo goes then the tach, then the rest.

the PO installed a new dash 6months ago, not a cover. So he had to remove the pass side airbag and he says its been doing it ever since.

So before I tear it apart does anyone think its just a loose connection that could cause this? thanks

congrats on the truck.
a no bus is usually a bad ground, but i didn't know there were any behind the dash.

edit - i'd start by pulling the cluster about halfway out and reseating it. you can't pull it all the way out without removing the PRNDL cable.

download and save this 01 service manual. it has really good wiring diagrams in the back.

a loose ground sounds right, cause sometimes itll just flicker off then come back on without me touching it.

are all the ground wires accessible in the kick panels? or underneath the dash?

does the truck die when this happens?id pop off the knee bolster and verify all the connections in there..if the truck doesnt die it is most likely a bad connection at the speedometer..

no, it doesn't shut off, runs like normal. its not the speedo, though I will try re-seating the cluster and see if that works.

there isnt many connections on the passenger's side of the dash if i recall..airbag..passenger's side door and one plug for the heater box..and in the a pillar there's a plug for the infinity tweeter if you have that option or not..but there are two harness's one that run's along the top of the firewall that stay's in when you pull the dash and one inside the actual dash itself that shouldnt need to be touched changing the dash

I pulled the cluster off and put it back on the other day, it hasn't shut off in the last 2 days so I think it may be fixed....strange
