Default trailer brake wiring harness

how do i tell if i have the harness for trailer brakes i just bought this truck it has the trailer electrical but im not sure about the brakes im needing to know if i just neet the brake unit itself if i already have the harness or everything any suggestions on how to find this out would be great

If it's a 4-wire then it's not going to control trailer brakes.

Does your truck have the factory 7-pole connector out back?

It has a 7 pole idk if its factory or not

98 maybe different from my 96 2500, but 96 was factory prewired with the 7 pin connector which included the brake wire. I just installed the brake control in the cab following the factory diagram -- all worked OK.

It's a 4-pin connector under the dash (often blue). Mine was cut off by some a$$hole down the road so I had to el-tape the 4 wires :{
