Default Gears/Speed

Now I know that two-wheel-drive trucks are generally made more for speed...but has anybody else noticed how beasty their truck really is, whether it is 2wd or 4wd? I know NO truck is really made for racing...but I am really surprised at what my lil 318 can do. My first gear (with 3.55's) will top out at about 53-54 miles an hour. To my friends and I, that is a lot of mph for the first gear. My buddy has the same gears, but 4wd and he tops out at about 42-44 mph. To me, this is crazy, but I kinda like it! I am not going to go out and race a Camaro SS, but I love picking on other trucks! Last night I killed me a 1998 Dodge Ram Sport 360 4x4 with cat back/no mufflers. I haven't really raced me a 1998-1999 Chevy 350 Vortec...I know those are powerful engines, but how well could a 318 or 360 hang with a 350 Vortec? I also know that with my mods...I am probably only putting out like 220-230 horsepower...if that! lol

My father-in-law's '96 Suburban has a 350 Vortec, so they do go back a ways.

350s take to mods better, and CHEAPER than our 360s do.

The 360s have more torque, but a SBC 350 will have more HP. Oh, and a camaro SS would make you look like you were standing still. Heck, even an IROC Z-28 camaro would smoke any of our trucks. Mostly because our trucks weigh about 3000 lbs more than those sportscars.

a 4x4 tops out lower because a 4x4 has to spin the transfer case as well as the tranny. YES, the transfer case still spins when 4x4 is not engaged.

vortecs are a good race but I take most of the ones I race, I think the best race for my truck is a 5.8l ford, I have a friend with one that is a match to my truck but a 95 and damn is it close until about 60, then the extra liter kicks in

Doesn't make sense.
Your truck or his truck with the 'extra liter'?
Its only .1L difference between the 2...

The iroc's were cool cars!!
The chevy 350 is deffinately easier to modify and a lot cheaper too. Great engine. Pretty cool though when our dodges can hang with them and beat em.
