Default New Transmission , NO SPEEDO AAHHHH!

Hi guys, new member long time lurker . You guys have helped me quite a bit with my nightmare 2nd gen in the last couple months. Anyway here's my problem. I blew my transmission (big surprise there) it's in a 97 1500 4x4. So I get a new transmission and install it. When I put everything back together I din't pay attention to the install postion of the VSS in the transfer case. Take it for a drive,no speedo, check the connections on the VSS everything is good, pull the housing out of the transfer case and to my horro I ripped the pinion gear off the vss housing!! So I check both gears no stripping can be seen gears seem alright. Find the proper install method for the VSS, reinstall. Still no speedo, figured ok traumatized the VSS need a new one. Order a new VSS and install it (now i didn't have my soldering iron so I used butt connectors don't know if this is relevant or not) take it for a drive (after I replaced the engine like I said night mare year) still no speedo!! So I figure I'll check the reference voltage, Nothing. I'm stumped I had a speed before I installed the new trans. What could be wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry to be so long winded but I figured if I gave you guys all the facts to start with it might cut down on the questions needed.

Are you sure the new tranny is of the same year? 97 is a very touchy year.

Tranny works fine, it shifts well and proper points as far as I can tell without a speedo. I ordered it from some place in Arizona ( I live in BC Canada) and they took all my info so I hope it's right. I find out after how weird the 97 is AAAHHH

97 and 96 for that matter were crazy years as far as sensors and obd1 and 2 are concerned. A 97 might or might not have a separate speed sensor located on the tranny. 98 is when they switched to only the VSS on top of the rear axle.

The only sensor I can find is in the tail of the transfer case. There's nothing in the rear diff either (no ABS)

For those interested I think I found the problem, it's a bad ground. Take it for a spin shortly and find out.
