Default to much air flow??? 99 Dodge Ram

I am a new member to the site and I just bought a 99 dodge ram. When I start driving it sounds like its sucking to much air. Its like if you took the air cleaner and tube off the intake. It whistles almost when you drive down the road like it has a turbo. Anyone know what this might be??? Thanks

Go to your local Dodge dealer and by an Idle Air Control Valve. Remove the old one and clean the TB before installing it.

Before buying that, I'd suggest that you make sure the air cleaner assembly is securely down on the TB. If it isn't tightened down and pushed down properly onto the gasket, it won't seal correctly, and has been known to create an air sucking or whistling sound sometimes. Also, make sure there is a gasket there. Sometimes previous owners will throw the gasket away that goes between the assembly and the TB. Its a simple round gasket available for a few dollars at most auto parts places (O'Reillys, Advance Auto, etc.) if its not there.

Otherwise, as zman suggested, it may be the IAC as well. However, the IAC is around $55 from an auto store ($40-ish if you to an online retailer) for a decent brand, so I'd check the simpler (cheaper) things first.

ok thanks for the info. I did notice that the air cleaner housing just had the pastic piece and the metal clamp. Dont think I seen a gasket. I was wondering if there should be a gasket there or not. Ill try that first and go from there.

Yeah, sometimes when I take the air cleaner assembly off, I failed to line it up correctly, so it is actually skewed and not sitting flush on the throttle body.

Without a gasket, it will whistle.

Make sure that the clamp has the tightening screw in the BACK of the air cleaner assembly. If you look close at the metal clamp, you will see that it is notched about 2.5 inches to clear the throttle cable bracket.

Crap! There should be a gasket! I have had the truck for about 75k miles and there has never been a gasket. I better go find me one. I always thought it was weird that there was no gasket.

Dont feel bad, my dad took the the gasket off my truck right around 60k and it went to 155 before it ever got another put on, just next time you stop by the store ask them for one they should have it in stock

Yeah Mine was missing the gasket when I bought the truck and it sounded like a small turbo.....and it was driving me nutty . I put a gasket and it stopped right away.
